Botox for Gummy Smiles
A gummy smile is when too much gum tissue is showing above the top teeth when a person is smiling and/or talking. Technically, a gummy smile is considered when more than 3mm or 1/8 inch of gum tissue is visible when smiling and the proportion of the teeth, gum tissues and the upper jaw are not in harmony with each other. This can be caused by a number of reasons including short teeth, too much bone, incorrect tooth position or a hyperactive lip.
Non Surgical Treatments for Gummy Smile
Typically the treatment for a gummy smile is very invasive. Many patients chose to live with and tolerate their gummy smile instead of undergoing major orthodontics or invasive surgeries. As an alternative, Pinnacle Dental now offers a non-invasive treatment using Botox. With as little as two units of Botox, a gummy smile can be fixed by slightly "freezing" the area above the upper lip. By treating this area, the lip is relaxed just enough to hide the unwanted gum tissue. For a patient with a severe amount of exposed gum tissue, Botox might not result in a full correction, but will greatly improve the patient's smile.
